Why I Work at OpenGov, A Top Workplace
It gives me great pleasure to announce that OpenGov has been selected as a Top Workplace award winner!
This award is a true recognition of our employees and leadership at OpenGov. I’m proud of everyone and I’m proud of being part of this family. There are more exciting things to come here at OpenGov with our expansion in hiring and a flexible “work from anywhere” mindset.
My time with OpenGov began 3 years ago, when I was enjoying a wonderful dinner at Vault restaurant in San Mateo, CA, across from OpenGov CEO Zac Bookman. I was about to embark on a journey of a lifetime when I accepted an offer to join OpenGov.
The idea of joining a technology, SaaS, Cloud startup (yes I know, all the cool buzzworthy words) was appetizing. The main entree was much more. The ability to build and shape the talent at OpenGov, a mission-driven company where the work you do actually makes a positive impact on our communities, cities, and states we live in, was a dream mission for a passionate Talent Acquisition leader like me.
We all know how powerful technology can be and the impact it can make. While there is so much cool technology out there for everything from hailing a ride with a stranger to showing off your dance moves to the world, there was something special about building talent with modern technology to impact perhaps our most important industry, our government.
Fast forward to today, 200+ hires later, the dream is a reality as I live the mission and passion every day in representing OpenGov. With the amazing support from leadership, I’m able to build my own recruitment team and double it in size (huge shout out to my team who are truly world-class and I owe sincere gratitude to everything you’ve accomplished).
OpenGov is truly one of a kind. A workplace where you know the work you do is meaningful and you’ll be proud to share with your family and friends. There are plenty of things I’m so humbled by and honored to see which have built OpenGov’s culture into what it is, and is also what makes it so special.
Starting from everyone’s first day here, every hire is celebrated by Recruitment, the hiring team, and our CEO. We welcome everyone by saying “Welcome to the OpenGov family” because we are family at OpenGov. We seek talent and build the culture around employees being Smart, Fun, and Humble. Our expansion nationwide has been exciting with offices in Portland, Chicago, Milwaukee, Boston, and Dallas.
Before the pandemic hit, we were expanding the Redwood City office fun by building a Kombucha and Beer bar. This effort was led by our General Counsel. What other company has their General Counsel actually help build a bar from scratch for the office?
During this pandemic, the culture has only grown stronger. Our ability to adapt to being a remote workforce was swift as we made a conscious effort to be a more distributed workforce a few years ago. Leadership provides regular and timely updates with full transparency of what’s going on. Q&A’s were all answered as employees can ask their questions through an anonymous system. Seeing trends that employees were taking less time off during the crisis, OpenGov added a half-day off before Memorial Day and a full day off after Independence Day weekend while encouraging employees to take more time off on their own. In a world of uncertainty, it was certain that OpenGov was taking care of its employees.
Our employees are the lifeline of OpenGov. Our CEO Zac has been consistent with that sentiment from day one. I’m proud to be contributing to building an organization that puts talent first. I’ve seen the company evolve from our product to people. We’ve known all along that we have something special building here at OpenGov. Now, a new audience can hear about it as well.
