The online imperative is a new reality pressing on local governments to change how they provide services to their customers. Citizens expect an Amazon.com like experience, with 24/7 accessibility and availability of services, but communities have been held back by constrained resources and the speed of public sector change. And now, in the COVID-19 era, with all the elements of offices closings, social distancing and tracking procedures—not to mention new service demands—the online imperative has escalated from being an expectation to a requirement.
