3 Local Government Wins to Celebrate This GIS Day

It's almost GIS Day, and what better way to celebrate "the mappiest day of the year" than highlight a few of our favorite real-world applications? From prepping for major snow events in Georgia to building X-ray vision in Washington, these three local governments are using the power of geographic information systems to make a huge difference in their communities.

Cobb County, Georgia

In response to recent major snow events, the Cobb County DOT decided it was time to make some changes. To keep citizens safe on Georgia's second-largest county-owned road network, the team used Esri's ArcGIS platform to create 26 snow routes and track the real-time location of their AVL-equipped trucks within their Cartegraph work and asset management system. The county even created web maps to show citizens when their street would be plowed, salted, and restored to safe travel conditions.

City of Auburn, Washington
Superheroes aren’t the only ones with X-ray vision anymore. By combining augmented reality with ArcGIS and Cartegraph, City of Auburn staff can see and interact with underground assets on their mobile devices before ever lifting a shovel. This futuristic tech is expected to open the door to more dynamic council presentations, easier remote or confined-space inspections, and preventing the expensive repairs and major project delays that come with unintentionally digging up critical assets.

City of Maple Grove, Minnesota

Recognized as the second best city in America, Maple Grove is focused on making sure city assets are in prime condition. With over 4,000 streetlights made up of different materials, tracking the condition and maintenance of each asset was a challenge. With the help of interns, ArcGIS, and Cartegraph, the city inspected and started tracking every light in about 45 days. Using mapping and data visualization capabilities within the software, the city is now identifying streetlight hot spots to prioritize replacements.
